Beijing is a place that is struggling to be world-class. There are 5 star hotels, top end restaurants and some of the world's most interesting cultural sites. There is also pollution, poverty and over population. While not the place to relax and get away, Beijing is your way in to rising China.

In the summer of 2005, I used a discount rail ticket to ride from Tokyo to Hiroshima, taking in the Japanese country side on my way. It was a 14 hour ride each way, but the World Expo and the 60th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing were both out in the west, so it was a pleasantly necessary trip. ï¿1/2
