As long as I can remember, I have dreamt of visiting California. In my dream, California is all about beaches, surfers, bohemian hippies and sun. I had the chance to visit San Diego, and it was everything I ever dreamt California to be!
I chose to visit San Diego this time because of its close proximity to Mexico, I can't get enough of Mexican culture, and there is no shortage of it in San Diego - from fish tacos to tequila, its all there with a Californian twist. We stayed at Ocean Beach hotel in Ocean Beach, a small community not far from downtown San Diego. The location was the perfect homebase for exploring the city, and offered great antique shopping, excellent surfing and a relaxed atmosphere where bare feet and surf boards are always welcome. The Ocean beach pier was just steps away from our hotel and provided gorgeous views of the sun setting over the ocean, and a chance to meet local fisherman and their catch of the day.
Besides the beaches there is plenty to do in San Diego. The Gaslamp Quarter downtown is lively and full of great dining, entertainment and more shopping. Balboa park, home to the San Diego Zoo is a must see, with its museums, historic architecture and beautiful gardens. If you like the zoo, head out to Escondido - about 30 miles north of the city and check out the Wild Animal Park. It houses animals in more natural settings and is bound to impress travellers of all ages. San Diego also boasts Sea World, and Belmont Amusement park where you can ride the ferris wheel beside the ocean. If you are looking for adventure there is no shortage of hiking trails along the cost and they all offer fantastic views. You can choose from a leisurly walk along the beach or takle more challenging terrain.
I would definitely recommend renting a car as it will allow you to explore everything southern California has to offer. Don't stop at the city limits, drive from coast to desert in about an hour, and explore the countryside which you will find is speckeled with wineries and hidden treasures. From ocean to mountains the scenery will take your breath away.
San Diego lived up to my California dream and I'm sure it will live up to yours.
